Practice Corner: Why Do LPNs Need Professional Liability Insurance?

Registrants and other stakeholders can contact the Professional Practice Team at the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) to receive clarification on Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) practice.

In Practice Corner, we’ll share some frequently asked questions and our answers.

Why Do LPNs Have to Obtain Insurance?

Professional liability insurance, also known as “malpractice insurance,” has a dual purpose: it protects the professional and safeguards the public interest. Requiring professional liability insurance improves trust in the LPN profession as Albertans know they have recourse in the event of harm.

In addition, LPNs can use their professional liability insurance to cover expenses related to legal representation (e.g., lawyer fees) in the complaints process.

What Activities Are Covered Under Professional Liability Insurance?

Alberta LPNs are required to obtain and pay for professional liability insurance that meets the minimum requirements established by CLPNA Bylaws.

LPNs are required to obtain professional liability insurance that explicitly covers LPN practice. Typically, the LPN insurance policy only provides coverage when working within the scope of practice of an LPN and will not apply when working outside of LPN scope of practice. For specific questions about the activities that your insurance covers, reach out to the relevant insurance provider directly.
