Care of the Older Adult Modules:
Ageism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Throughout 2025, the CLPNA will release modules on the care of older adults. These modules provide an evidence-informed lens to support critical thinking, professional judgement, and integrate knowledge of trends and issues related to care of the older adult.

New module: Ageism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Coming up next: Leadership and Ageism

Ageism describes discrimination and exclusion based on someone’s age. Studies show that ageism presents a significant factor in the lives of older adults, who may experience increased social isolation, poorer physical and mental health, and slower recovery from disability. This module addresses the impacts of ageism and diversity in care.

What Will LPNs Learn in this Module?

This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people.

LPNs who complete this module can expect to learn the following.

  • Develop an understanding of levels of ageism and the impact of ageism.
  • Understand social exclusion and barriers to older people due to social exclusion.
  • Understand elder abuse, its type, risk factors for abuse, and nursing assessment of abuse.
  • Develop an understanding of diversity in care.
